Release: November 17, 2023
In a unique musical exploration of Denmark’s nature, pianist/composer Peter Rosendal has created a body of work that gives voice to the natural world. Inspired by early morning walks around the country, Rosendal’s coming together of field recordings and delicate compositions titled ‘Vejviser’ is set to release on November 17th on Creative Cph Records.
With over 10 albums to his name, Rosendal is a seasoned jazz artist who has toured internationally with the likes of Gregory Hutchinson, Sinne Eeg, Paulo Moura, Chris Minh Doky, and Toninho Horta and has earned multiple music awards, including the prestigious ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ title in Jazz Special for his 2020 release Trickster.
In the Danish language, the word ‘Vejviser’ carries a beautiful duality of meanings. On one hand, it can be translated as ‘Wayfinder’, on the other hand, it can also mean ‘Road Folk Songs’.
Using his two pianos, a Steinway and a Hornung & Møller, Rosendal improvised and drew melodic lines from the richness of his country’s landscapes, allowing his musical voice to mirror and blend with the birds, frogs, and insects. Built around hypnotic piano patterns and meandering melodies on the melodica, flugabone, trumpet and saxophone, the record’s sound is healing, introspective and delicate. Creative modern production techniques create a tapestry of spaces and textures, reflective of the complex intricacies found in nature.
Rosendal was joined by respected musicians including legendary trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg best known for his collaborations with Miles Davis, internationally acclaimed saxophonist Cecilie Strange, bassist Craig Earle, Canadian singer Nancy Harms, and producer Mads B. B. Krog.
‘Vejviser’ is a musical symbiosis exploring the boundary between human nature and that of nature itself. What impact do other species have on our lives, and do these other species possess intrinsic value?
